Basanta Utsav at Shantiniketan, an Important Seasonal Festival at Santiniketan

Description of Vasant Utsav at Shantiniketan:

Basanta Utsav is one of the most important festivals at Shantiniketan. The festival Vasant Utsav “Spring Festival” heralds the spring season and is held during Holi. Every year, the students and the youths, the teachers of Visva Bharati University in Santiniketan, attired in yellow coloured dresses, celebrate Holi in a very special way. On that day, a number of cultural programmes like group choreography, songs and dance performances, are staged by the students. Students are dressed in yellow costumes and welcome spring season through Tagore’s songs (Rabindra Sangeet) and dances (Rabindra Nritya). A lot of open-air programmes are held during this time. The students entertain visitors with some spectacular performances. They sing beautiful Rabindra Sangeet and dance to the tune of great music in groups. The function is very enjoyable and visitors will surely be charmed and impressed by the function. They welcome the spring season whole-heartedly. Later in the day, the students, teachers and the gathered people apply a coloured powder (Abeer).
A number of tourists including many foreigners come to Santiniketan to celebrate the festival. It is now became an integral part of Bengali culture.
The date of Vasanta Utsav varies each year but it generally falls in the month of March. This year, Basanta Utsav is to be held on 8th March, 2012. It is an ideal time to visit Shantiniketan and to enjoy an unforgatable day at Tagore’s Place.
